The color spectrum is a graphical display of each color in the light. Scientists use wavelength numbers to represent colors instead of color names, which is a more accurate color measurement method. So the wavelength of red may be 630 or 660. These two colors seem to us to be red, but in fact, they are different colors.

LED plant growth lights that use fluorescent bulbs to call the color of the bulb cool white (bluer) or warm white (redder). This is useful for fluorescent lights, but this name does not work for LED plant growth lights. When it comes to LED plant growth light, it is more accurate to use wavelengths to speak and display the actual color spectrum.

What colors do plants use?

Plants mainly use light for photosynthesis, which is done through specific chemicals in the leaves. Examples of more important chemicals include chlorophyll A and B. In the absorption spectrum (measuring how much light is absorbed), you can see the peaks in the blue and red regions, which means that these colors are used for photosynthesis.

Almost no light is absorbed in the green range. This leads to the wrong conclusion that plants only need blue and red light.

How do you make white light with LEDs?

As mentioned above, every LED plant growth light has a specific wavelength, but none can provide a full white spectrum like the sun.

One solution to providing white light is to combine light bulbs of different colors into one LED plant growth light. The basic unit combines blue and red. More advanced units will include yellow and green light bulbs. Since a typical light fixture contains many bulbs, it can be customized to produce a different number of each color. Mix enough bulbs of different colors to get white light. Another way to produce white light is to coat the bulb lens with a phosphor compound. Such light bulbs usually use blue light to illuminate phosphors and produce white light. This is similar to how fluorescent bulbs work.

White LED plant growth light seems to be the best choice, but there is a problem. Whenever light is converted to another color, some intensity is lost in the conversion process. This means that white bulbs produce less light than equivalent LED bulbs without phosphor coating. White bulbs are also more expensive. Even with these limitations, they are becoming a popular choice for LED plant growth light.
